Area rugs can have the same effect on a room as a fresh coat of paint or a new window treatment. They all anchor the room, subtly drawing your eye to notice other elements within the design. Finding the right place to buy a rug that matches your style is the first step in enhancing your home’s interior.

We love the variety of rug retailers that can now be browsed online, but gauging quality through retailer images alone is challenging. We’ve tested rugs from 35 retailers over the past few years, and we’ve experienced the whole spectrum from really great to not-so-great designs.

Our favorite rug retailers offer high-quality pieces and have shoppable websites with easy-to-navigate pages and detailed information about each rug design. We’ve purchased from and loved the performance of All Modern, Ruggable, Tumble, and Revival rugs—just to name a few—but each brand’s comprehensive website sets it apart and makes the feat of finding a rug you’ll truly love less daunting.

All Modern may be the trend-setting sister brand to Wayfair’s something-for-everyone model, but we were very impressed with the selection of rugs available on its site. We’ve tested both a traditional oriental patterned rug and a modern checkered shag rug from All Modern, and we were impressed by the performance of both designs.

We also appreciated the product listings matching the rugs’ in-person colors and patterns. The rugs section of All Modern’s website has several unique filters like shop by room, life stage, technique/weave, and knot structure. You can also filter for rugs that offer samples. Based on our research, samples range between $5 and $30, but you may have to contact All Modern’s design services team for samples of certain rug designs.

The educational resources scattered around the site also make it easier to shop if you’re a first-time rug buyer. We came across a how-to video for measuring your space and a “fibers at a glance” chart while browsing. Despite the stricter return policy, which states all items must be returned in original packaging within 30 days, we’re pleased with the resources All Modern’s website offers to feel confident in a purchase.

Shipping: Free for orders over $35 (flat rate of $4.99, if under) | Returns: Items must be returned in original packaging within 30 days for a refund or store credit

One of our favorite places to buy furniture, Pottery Barn’s rug designs are no exception to its excellent assortment of products for outfitting every corner of a home. The brand’s rug offerings are a little more neutral in tone and classic in pattern, so you won’t find ultra-mod designs in its inventory. However, they frequently have unique artist collaborations with statement-making collections.

Each rug product page allows you to purchase samples and locate the nearest brick-and-mortar store where the rug is available for viewing. You can also scroll down the page to learn about rug sizing and placement within different rooms of your home. We love this educational feature and how interactive it is. Plus, it’s paired with every rug listing, so you don’t have to switch between tabs to reference the tool.

Pottery Barn does not offer free shipping on its rugs, and the shipping costs are buried deep within the checkout process, which we don’t love. However, the brand is upfront in sharing when your rug will arrive. In our testing experience, some rugs may take weeks or months to ship out, which can be a drawback for anyone hoping to quickly style a room.

Shipping: $5.95+ | Returns: Items can be returned within 30 days; Made-to-order rugs not eligible

If you want to find a one-of-a-kind or vintage rug, Revival Rugs is a standout retailer for that purpose. The website’s main navigation bar highlights washable & easy-care rugs, one-of-a-kind rugs, and swatches. Within these sections, you can further filter by age, origin, and pile, among other, more common filters like material and size.

We’ve tested numerous rugs from Revival and have always been very happy with the quality, finding that the designs were reflected well by the product listing. While Revival Rugs is more expensive, the quality completely justifies the investment.

The real star on Revival’s website, for us, is the “see it in your room” tool, which allows you to upload a photo of a room in your home, then interact with the rug by moving it around, resizing it, or swapping to a different design. The care instructions for each rug are also thorough, and we love that there’s a rug quiz to help you define the style of rug you’re shopping for.

Shipping: Free | Returns: Items can be returned within 30 days in unused/unwashed condition; a $35 restocking fee may apply; Made-to-order and final sale items are not eligible

Ruggable is known for its washable rugs and two-part rug and pad system. You can purchase a basic rug pad (or upgrade to the cushioned pad) with any rug on the site. The underside of the rug and the top of the rug pad adhere to each other, similar to Velcro, which makes the brand’s rugs ideal for high-traffic areas where your rugs are likely to skid.

While we’ve noticed that the machine-washable designs we’ve tested aren’t the most cushioned options on the market, they are incredibly durable. We especially enjoy their indoor-outdoor rug designs.

Ruggable isn’t the best retailer if you’re hoping to find an abstract or oval rug, but the variety of patterns, colors, and frequent collaborations still make it a great rug-exclusive retailer. We appreciate the extensive care guide included online, and a sizing guide is also available, like the websites for other retailers on our list.

Shipping: Free | Returns: Any product purchased from Ruggable.com can be returned for a full refund (excluding a $25 processing fee per item) or exchanged within 30 days

Ruggable offers samples if you’re having trouble picking between several different rugs. You can order three 10” x 10” samples for $15, and the brand offers the option to try a regular or cushioned pad sample at no extra charge.

If you’re looking for a rug-exclusive retailer that offers more outside of washable rugs, we recommend Rugs USA. We love the additional tags on the website located underneath each rug image, highlighting features like washability, performance materials, handmade designs, and recycled designs.

The photos for each rug are also very detailed on this site, compared to others on our list, showing the backing, surface texture, and pile height. We’ve tested a handful of rugs from this site and will highlight that they weren’t the most durable against abrasion, so be wary if you have pets who like to claw at soft surfaces.

However, the rugs did prove durable in high-traffic areas of our homes, and we loved how similar they looked to the product listings. We wish this site had a bit more educational information tucked into its different sections. We were only able to find a rug quiz while browsing, so this may be a better option for someone who already knows what they’re looking for and wants a value-packed design

Shipping: Free | Returns: Items may be returned within 30 days; some items may incur additional shipping charges

Another leader in the washable rug industry, Tumble’s website has extensive educational information on fitting washable rugs into your home machines, spill-proof surfaces, sizing, and more.

While the brand is similar to Ruggable, its rug pad and setup vary. Plus, these rugs arrive in flat-packed boxes instead of rolled in plastic, which makes them easier to return when needed. We really loved the Tabor rug that we tested at home, and it was perfect for a small dining area.

We wish more filters were available on the site, but we love the variety of patterns and designs offered. The designs are also exclusive to Tumble and illustrated in-house, so you won’t find them across other retailers. While this retailer is a great fit for anyone looking exclusively for a washable rug, some shoppers may find the selection limiting as you won’t find wool, shag, or hand-loomed rugs among its inventory.

Shipping: Free | Returns: You can return rugs for any reason within 30 days; All returned items must have no visible damage, stains, or pet hair

If you’re looking for a rug that’s quick to ship and has hundreds (or thousands) of reviews attached to it, we recommend shopping on Amazon. While there are dozens of brands across Amazon, we’ve purchased and tested Loloi, Safavieh, and nuLoom rugs through the retailer and enjoyed using them.

The educational materials available for each rug will depend largely on its listing brand, but we found several rugs with helpful graphics while browsing. However, we really love Amazon for the number of reviews that a given product can accumulate. It’s easy to click through real-world images of the rugs in different spaces and see the true colors and patterns.

We just recommend being extra thorough when reading through the specifications and description for each rug you view. The information listed isn’t always accurate, or isn’t easily displayed on the product listing.

While Ikea wouldn’t be our first choice for every type of rug, the retailer’s value-packed products can’t be beat if you have multiple rooms you’re looking to cover. We’ve enjoyed the flatwoven rugs we’ve tested from the brand, as they’re a great alternative to jute rugs

The website isn’t as informative for learning while shopping, though. We didn’t encounter any supplemental educational materials regarding sizing outside of the typical care instructions and rug pad recommendations that other retailers also offer on each product page. The sizing for each rug is sometimes limited to one or two options compared to rug-specific retailers on our list, with at least five sizes for each product.

However, we think Ikea is a great low-stakes retailer for trying out a rug style that you may be on the fence about purchasing from a different retailer. Ikea’s 180-day return window is the most forgiving on our list, and even opened products are eligible for a full refund.

Shipping: Varies | Returns: New and unopened products may be returned within 365 days; Open products may be returned within 180 days with proof of purchase

We’ve tested a good number of rugs from Walmart, but most of them have been from the Better Homes & Gardens product line. (Better Homes & Gardens is owned by The Spruce's parent company, Dotdash Meredith.) These rugs have proven to be high-value and durable, sometimes beating out more expensive options.

Walmart’s online store functions similarly to Amazon’s, where third-party sellers (brands not sold directly by Walmart) can sell on the site. We recommend paying close attention to where a rug is sold and shipped from when shopping, as this will impact the shipping time. Walmart has a wide inventory of rug styles, and we appreciate that it even carries some less common sizes like 12 feet by 15 feet.

You won’t find any educational resources on the website, but the review section can be a helpful place to gauge customer experiences and see real-world photos of the rugs. We think Walmart is another great retailer for those who already know what they’re shopping for and want great value for their money.

Shipping: Free shipping on orders over $35 (on eligible items) | Returns: Free, 90-day returns

Wayfair is another rug retailer with a large inventory of rugs because it’s open to third-party sellers, similar to Amazon and Walmart’s websites. While we don’t consider Wayfair a great retailer for one-of-a-kind rugs or heirloom-quality pieces, it’s a great resource for shopping recognizable brands (All Modern being among them) during major sale events.

We’ve purchased and tested several Loloi designer collaborations and Dash and Albert rugs from Wayfair, and we’ve felt the sale price made them compelling picks. Wayfair’s filtered results can also be unpredictable; we filtered for blue rugs and saw a black and tan rug on the results page.

Despite a slightly clunkier shopping experience, we do like Wayfair for its range of rug styles, sizes, and prices available. No matter what budget or room you’re shopping for, you should be able to find a handful of designs with comprehensive reviews to aid in your decision

Shipping: Free | Returns: Items must be returned within 30 days; Customer pays for return shipping

West Elm may not be the first retailer that comes to mind for rug shopping, but we’re big fans of its wool rug offerings. The brand’s inventory is similar to Pottery Barn’s. It's mainly focused on neutrals and traditional patterns, but you can still find some unique artisan collaborations.

We like that West Elm also highlights rugs that are handcrafted or sustainably sourced and made in Fair Trade facilities as you scroll through the results pages. The rug product photos are also very detailed, so you can get a good sense of what the rug will look like styled in your home before purchasing.

The brand’s size offerings are more limited, but we found a handful of rugs available with custom sizing. Despite not having the most extensive inventory compared to other retailers on our list, we think West Elm is a great investment brand, similar to Pottery Barn and Revival Rugs.

Shipping: Varies | Returns: Items may be returned within 30 days; Customer may be responsible for paying shipping for returns

How We Tested Places to Buy Rugs

We’ve been testing area rugs since 2022, and part of our testing process has always included evaluating the delivery process of the rugs, which can be a reflection of the retailer.

We recently spent several hours browsing through the websites of 17 out of 35 rug retailers we’ve purchased rugs from to determine their overall shoppability. While shopping, we focused on five main categories: assortment, navigation and browsing, product page details, education, and logistics.

We considered how many common categories of rugs each retailer offered. Think: Performance rugs, wool rugs, washable rugs, or indoor/outdoor rugs. While browsing the main landing page, we also looked at the types of filters offered to shoppers. We noted retailers with unique filters and looked at the sizing filters to see whether custom and oversized rugs were available.

We tested the accuracy of the filters by selecting the 8x10 and blue filters and looked at what type of results appeared on the page. Then we clicked on a rug and looked at the product listing to see what information was provided for each product. We noted the number of product photos, the detail of the care instructions (when provided), any additional purchasing recommendations (like rug pads or swatches), and educational tools.

We also looked for other educational materials listed separately on the website, like sizing guides and care tips. Lastly, we reviewed the shipping costs, delivery options, and return policies, considering how convenient (or challenging) it would be to return a rug.

As we considered each retailer's value, we also reviewed the performance of the rugs we had previously tested from each brand. The retailers on our list are those that are not only relatively fuss-free to shop but also have high-quality, durable designs.

What to Look for in a Rug Retailer

Variety of Rug Styles and Materials

Knowing the type of rug or material you’d prefer is a great jumping-off point before starting your search for an area rug. However, not knowing either of these details is okay, too!

Most of the retailers on our list offer a wide variety of rug types, rather than specializing in one style. Ruggable and Tumble are the two exceptions to this, as they’re both known for washable rugs. We recommend considering a washable rug if it will be located in a high-traffic area like an entryway or children’s play area

Revival Rugs and Rugs USA are the other two rug-specific retailers on our list and have the greatest variety of rug styles and materials. They also have helpful filters that make narrowing down your options easier. These two retailers can be great for shoppers who don’t want to be limited by a brand’s specific aesthetic.

A rug’s material is just as important and sometimes dictates its type or style. Performance rugs will more often be made from polypropylene, a synthetic fiber. Whereas hand-knotted and loom-woven rugs will be made with natural fibers like cotton, wool, silk, and jute. From testing, we’ve loved wool rugs from Revival Rugs and jute rugs from Ikea.

Helpful Shopper Resources

While not required, educational materials can make the shopping experience even more enjoyable, especially if you’ve never purchased a rug before. These were more extensive for rug-specific retailers like Ruggable and Revival Rugs

However, retailers with wider product inventories, like Pottery Barn and West Elm, offer free design services, which can be just as informative. We really liked that Pottery Barn has a sizing guide listed on each rug’s product page, so you can consider what type of furniture might anchor the rug in different rooms.

Fewer retailers offer the option to purchase swatches, but a few on our list do offer this option. We found that swatches range in price from $5 to $25, and All Modern, Pottery Barn, Revival Rugs, Tumble, and West Elm all offer swatches.

View in 3D and AI-generated shopping experiences are becoming more common across retailers, but we didn’t find this feature as common among the retailers on our list. And even for those with it, our experience wasn’t super informative, since rugs are flat. We imagine this feature is much more useful for larger home items.

Shipping Costs and Return Policies

Researching a retailer’s return policy is an important final check before you purchase a rug online. Most of the retailers on our list have a 30-day return policy, but we recommend digging even deeper than the return window to learn the specifics on how a retailer wants large items (like rugs) returned.

Several retailers on our list require items to be returned in their original condition and packaging. Re-packaging a rug can be quite difficult after you’ve unrolled it and placed furniture on top. We recommend analyzing the rug's colors and placing it in your desired location for a day or two while it’s still rolled up before you remove all of the packaging.

Thankfully, some rug-exclusive retailers on our list, like Tumble, have a much more forgiving return policy. Tumble will even cover all return shipping costs for customers within the contiguous United States. Ikea has the longest return window on our list at 180 days, and the brand also accepts used products within this time frame.

Shipping costs are another factor to consider, but thankfully, we’ve found most retailers offer free shipping for higher-cost orders and oversized products. Two retailers on our list charge shipping fees based on the product type and destination: Pottery Barn and West Elm.

Why Trust The Spruce?

Emma Ashe is an editor at The Spruce who specializes in home decor. Ashe grew up in a home (and currently lives in an apartment) with hardwood floors and is very familiar with the search for the perfect area rug. She prefers a mixture of washable runners for hallways with frequent foot traffic and softer, natural fiber area rugs for bedrooms.

Ashe analyzed our testing results from all of our area rug tests and our recent evaluation of the retailers on this list. She included a mixture of big box stores and rug-specific brands with a wide selection of rug styles at various prices.
