Easy strategies for dealing with the near-universal experience of stress.

Stress has become a near-universal experience as well as a rising public health concern.

According to many measures, people today are dealing with stressors that are greater in number and severity than in the past several decades, and this stress is taking a toll on our collective wellness.

Bringing considerable content from her popular stress management Web site on About.com, Elizabeth Scott distills information about stress management into central ideas and strategies for consumers. These include learning to reduce the stress response and stressors, practicing long-term resilience habits, and putting positive psychology research into action. These various perspectives provide a multilayered framework for understanding stress and approaching stress management that is inspirational, action-oriented, and backed by foundational and recent knowledge in the field.

The quick-to-read “8 keys” format of the book can be utilized on many levels so that busy readers can quickly find relief from stress.

"[This book] provides a thorough and detailed overview on the subject. . . . [T]he book gives us an opportunity to take more of a structured and introspective look at the self. It’s a resource that one might actively work through and then revisit later, rather than read once and put on the shelf. . . . PsychCentral

"[A] useful, practical guide to approaching stress. . . . [S]hort enough to be a quick read, yet substantial enough to be a worthwhile one."

This book is a useful, practical, and comprehensive guide that helps the reader find healthy ways to live life more fully."
Howard Blumenfeld, PhD, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction teacher

"I have never seen a more incisive approach to stress reduction and management. The 8 keys format is friendly and easy to use, with down-to-earth examples from daily life. Theoretically sound, eminently practical, and unequivocal without being rigid, this book presents an effective strategy for virtually any real-life situation."
Emery J. Cummins, Emeritus Professor of Counseling, San Diego State University

"
8 Keys to Stress Management does an exemplary job of simplifying and explaining stress, addressing its physical and psychological aspects while providing practical examples of how to manage it. Elizabeth Scott reminds us that, while we can’t control all stressors, we can control our attitude, and this alone helps us to manage stress better."
Pamela Gail Johnson, Founder, Secret Society of Happy People

"In a global culture where 'overwhelmed,' 'stressed-out,' and 'burned-out' are part of our daily vocabularies, Scott shows us evolutionary alternatives that allow us to live fully and healthily. This book will prompt you to realign with your true self... and, most of all, you'll get your twinkly back!"
Ann-Marie McKelvey, LPCC, MCC, Buddhist Chaplain, Psychotherapist, Wellness Coach

So many books spend so much time talking about theory that they seem to never quite get to the part where they tell you what to do in order to feel better. This is certainly not the case with this book. Elizabeth Anne Scott dives right in at the start with practical suggestions for simple, everyday changes that you can make in order to handle the stresses of your life differently so as not to feel so overwhelmed. She even offers the choice that you don't have to read the whole book in order to benefit from what she has to offer! That in itself is stress-reducing! She does discuss how stress affects the way we feel physically and emotionally, but does it in an easy to understand manner. As you read this book, you will feel as if she is your good friend, working right alongside of you, helping you to make small changes, one by one, to make your life feel more manageable and enjoyable. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is feeling that their life is out of control, or is feeling that life is all work and no play, or knows that the stress of their life is taking a toll on their physical health.

Textbook. That's the word that comes to mind when reading Ms. Scott's book. By this, I don't mean a stodgy 10-pound book lugged around in one's backpack, but rather a book that is both practical and theoretical at the same time. If I were teaching or taking a class on stress management, this is the book I'd use. I was particularly impressed by Ms. Scott's observation that the body doesn't know what the mind is doing. In other words, if the mind is reliving a stressful incident, the body reacts as if the incident were actually happening. I also liked Ms. Scott's references and resources, particularly Martin Seligman's work on Positive Psychology.

That doesn't mean the book wasn't practical. It was full of exercises one could do for both immediate stress relief and long-term stress relief. From personal experience, I can say the ones I've tried definitely work. In these stressful times, a book like this is needed. More specifically, this book is needed.

Instead of reading 10 books you can read this one as it covers all aspects of stress management. I have read the other 10 and this consolidates all the current thinking.

I read 8 Keys to Stress Management for two reasons. First, Elizabeth is an About.com Guide as I am. I was professionally curious to see the work product of one of my peer writers. Second, over the last year I've experienced what most people would call a crushing level of stress... and yet it seems I have grown stronger and evolved from the experience. I wondered if 8 Keys to Stress Management might have answers as to why I haven't cracked. It did. I've spent my life reading and learning. I exercise and eat healthy. One of my best friends is a leadership/relationship coach and her counsel has been invaluable. I have used a lifetime of gathered learning to cope with my own stress. Elizabeth's book incorporates and pulls together tools and techniques that it has taken me years to gather and build into habits in my life. From the practice of using a gratitude journal (something I do to this day if my head gets me to thinking down an 'poor me' type of path, to techniques like "thought stopping", "stop thinking", "mindful eating" her book is filled with practical things you can start doing NOW to cope with stress. The section I found most interesting was on establishing boundaries in relationships. I would have loved to see this section expanded upon with real-life stories of how people have become aware of crossed-boundaries and figured out how to make effective changes. If you are looking to find ways to cope with stress and bring more joy and happiness in your life this book will spell out exactly what you need to do to make it happen.
