Verywell Fit / Tamara Staples

Whether you’re looking to gain weight, lose weight, or merely want to track your weight over time, a bathroom scale is one of the simplest devices you can use to keep tabs on your progress. To find the best bathroom scales, we first consulted experts to learn which key features every model should have. Then, we tested 38 bathroom scales at home and in The Verywell Testing Lab.

As we used the scales in our regular routines, we evaluated each one for its accuracy, setup, data storage, display and readability, ease of use, durability, and value. We also had a board-certified clinical specialist in orthopedic physical therapy and an athletic trainer from our Review Board review this article for accuracy, how to use bathroom scales safely, and the best way to evaluate them.

  • Automatically double-checks readings

  • Large, wide display

  • Low battery life alerts

Set up was simple and seamless; we had it up and running within a minute of taking it out of the box. The display is large and wide, and extra-bright, so we didn't have to squint when trying to read our measurements. And we appreciated that the reading stayed on the screen for several seconds after stepping off the scale so we didn't miss it.

During testing, we found that this bathroom scale is very accurate. It features a weight verification tech that double-checks readings more than once for extremely precise results. No calibration is needed; we just stepped on it and got an accurate reading in seconds. This bathroom scale can also measure lightweight objects, such as foods and pets, with pinpoint precision. • This scale only measures weight, so it’s best for those who aren’t interested in tracking other metrics.

Most Valuable Insight

“This honestly couldn't be easier to set up because all I had to do was step on, and the scale displayed my weight. Because it's a more basic scale, with only one measurement and no user profiles, setup was really seamless.” —Michelle P., CYT, Verywell Fit product tester

  • Tracks 14 metrics

  • Unlimited users

Cons
  • BMI readings may not be reliable

Who It’s For

Best for individuals who want to track multiple health metrics, including body composition, BMI, and weight.

Why We Love It

Arboleaf's Digital Scale measures and tracks 14 different metrics, allows unlimited users, and even has an athlete mode that uses a different body composition algorithm for more precise measurements. During testing, this scale proved less accurate than our Best Overall pick but still close enough to get the job done. It was only off by 0.4 pounds compared to a medical-grade scale and 0.9 pounds compared to a fixed-weight dumbbell. We found the scale very easy to set up and use: unbox, insert the batteries it ships with, and it's ready to go.

We liked the Arboleaf free app, which was easy to download, set up, and navigate. If you open the app before stepping on the scale, it will automatically log your weight so you can track changes over time. The app also tracks other metrics, such as skeletal muscle weight, fat mass, body water content, and more. We especially liked the sleek design, smooth surface, and bright LED display, making it easy to read your measurements straight from the scale.

Potential Flaws

We also love the scale's quality and durability: its sturdy construction gives us confidence that it will last a long time with only regular battery replacements. Plus, the scale automatically turns off after use to conserve battery life and extend its lifespan.

Potential Flaws

  • This scale doesn’t store any data, so if you want to track your weight, you’ll need to do that manually with a fitness journal or app.

Most Valuable Insight

“The thing that I love the most about this scale is that it's so wide. I had never seen one so wide, and it made the readings so much easier to see. Who It's For

Best for individuals who may need to move their scale in and out of a storage space frequently.

Why We Love It

Sometimes, moving around a scale can be a little frustrating due to clunky and cumbersome designs. We love Renpho’s Core 1S Body Scale because it proved lightweight and space-saving during testing. At under 2.5 pounds, it's one of the lightest scales we tested, and we were pleasantly surprised at how sturdy and durable it felt despite its lighter weight. Plus, the non-slip material on the bottom of the scale helped us feel stable, despite the compact platform size.

The setup was quick and easy, requiring only the installation of the included AAA batteries. And we like that the scale is self-calibrating and features a low battery indicator and an auto-shutoff function. We found the LED display easy to read, even in low light, and the numbers remain on the screen as long as you stay on the scale, giving you plenty of time to get an accurate reading.

  • This scale has a smaller platform size than some others we tested, so we found it slightly awkward to stand on.

Most Valuable Insight

“This is the lightest scale I have ever owned! It’s also smaller, so I was a little worried about stepping on it. However, the anti-slip material on the bottom and wide base made me feel secure when weighing myself.” —Katrina C., Verywell Fit product tester

Key Specs

Item Weight: 5 pounds | Weight Capacity: 400 pounds | Connectivity: None | Dimensions: 13 x 11.7 x 1.25 inches | Power Source: Battery | User Capacity: Unlimited | Our Overall Rating: 4.8/5

Who It's For

Best for individuals wanting a sleek, glass design that’s accurate, simple, and looks good in their bathroom.

Why We Love It

During testing, we fell in love with Taylor's Digital Glass Chrome Bathroom Scale's modern glass look—and it's functional features, too. The thick glass is tempered, providing stability and safety. It’s also wide enough to spread your toes comfortably and still read the display. The scale features an instant-read function, so you get a reading as soon as you step on it.

The base is chrome and features anti-slip pads, so the scale felt very secure when we stepped on it—especially important on a bathroom floor. We also noted that the glass and chrome made this scale easy to clean. And, it’s as easy to use as it is attractive: it was ready to begin using right out of the box. Our measurements were ready in a matter of seconds, with no manual calibration needed. The readings were accurate, showing consistent data when we weighed the same objects on another scale.

Potential Flaws

  • The display is not back-lit, making it difficult to read in low-lit conditions.
  • This scale only measures body weight, and there is no app or data storage, so you'll need to track your stats manually.

Most Valuable Insight

“This is one sturdy scale for it being made out of glass. The tempered glass platform is thick, so I never felt scared to step on it, or like I was going to fall through.” —Katrina C., Verywell Fit product tester

Bathroom Scales We Also Tested

After testing 38 bathroom scales, only 11 made the cut. These six scales ultimately didn't impress us enough to be included in our list of top picks.

  • iDOO's High Precision Digital Bathroom Scale was easy to set up and use, and we found it very durable. However, we noticed that the scale's display is hard to read against its blue background, and we didn't like that the measurement is displayed as flashing text instead of a normal readout.
  • EatSmart's Precision 550 Bathroom Scale might work for you if you're looking for a basic scale that's simple to use, but it didn't have additional features we would expect at this price point. Plus, we saw footprints left behind after weigh-ins during testing, which made the scale look dirty.
  • Fitbit's Aria Air Digital Bathroom Scale received high scores for its display, readability, and durability, but it scored poorly for setup and data storage. The scale's app is locked behind a paywall, so you need to pay for an additional subscription to access metrics.
  • INEVIFIT's Bathroom Scale was very easy to set up and has an auto-calibration feature, but there’s no data storage. We also found that the bathroom scale’s display was a lot easier to read in darker lighting. While it’s very sturdy and accurate, we couldn’t justify the price point for its value.
  • Ozeri's Precision II Digital Bathroom Scale and Ozeri's WeightMaster are bathroom scales with a larger weight capacity (440 pounds) with easy setup, batteries included, and no calibration needed. However, the display color codes the measurements with red and green depending on whether your weight increased or decreased from your last use, which can be unsettling for some people.

What We've Updated

  • After our initial Lab test, we took each bathroom scale home and continued testing over the course of one month. We used the scales daily, continuing to evaluate each one across all key categories.
  • Once testing was complete, we reworked our superlatives, removing some products and adding new ones to focus on the absolute best bathroom scales we tested.
  • We will continue to test bathroom scales long-term at home, and will update our list as new models are released, or if we gain new testing insights.

What to Look for When Shopping for Bathroom Scales

  • Mechanical vs. Digital: Mechanical scales use an interior spring that compresses when the scale is weighted, displaying the reading on a dial. These scales are generally less expensive than digital scales and offer basic weight readings. Digital scales run on batteries and display numerical results on a digital readout. They can often be at the higher end of the price scale, but also often include other features and metrics. Consider how much information you need from your scale before choosing which type to purchase.
  • Platform Size: Most scales, whether they're digital or mechanical, are similar in size. But, if you, or someone in your household, has a wider stance, make sure that the scale is large enough tot comfortably stand on. Check the dimensions of the scale you're considering before purchasing.
  • Body Composition Measurements: Many digital scales can provide body composition measurements, which is the ratio of fat mass to lean tissue in your body. Registered dietitian Lauren Hubert recommends choosing a scale with this function if you are trying to lose weight or manage your fitness.
  • WiFi or Bluetooth Capabilities: Some digital smart scales can store and track data over time and even sync with fitness trackers or smartphone apps. If you want support in reaching your goals, this is a great feature to have, so look for a scale with WiFi or Bluetooth capabilities.
  • App: High-tech digital scales often include proprietary apps, which you may also be able to sync with other apps, such as Apple Health, Garmin Connect, or Fitbit. This can allow you to keep all your health data in one place and recognize trends between activity levels, sleep stats, and your body weight.
  • Affordability: Mechanical scales tend to be more affordable but offer fewer features. Thankfully, high-tech, digital smart scales come in a wide range of price points, so you should be able to find one that fits your budget if this is the type of scale you're interested in. Just compare the features you need to your budget when shopping.

How We Tested the Bathroom Scales

To determine which bathroom scales are worth your investment, we initially tested 38 top-rated options in our Lab, comparing measurements of each option to a medical-grade scale. After Lab testing, we took the top-performing scales home for additional testing over four weeks, using each one in our daily routines. We made sure to weigh ourselves right after waking up, before eating or drinking, at least three times a week. When testing bathroom scales, whether in our Lab or at home, we evaluate each option based on the following key criteria.

  • Reading Consistency: We test each scale's reading consistency three times. First, we weigh ourselves on a medical-grade bathroom scale to get our baseline weight. Then, we weigh ourselves on each of the scales we're testing and compare the two numbers. Next, we place the bathroom scale on different surfaces (a hard tile floor and a low-pile rug) to see how much the numbers vary. Finally, we weigh ourselves while holding a pair of 4.3-pound dumbbells and compare readings to see if the scale can pick up the weight difference.
  • Setup: After unpacking the scale, we download and set up any necessary apps, noting how long the entire setup process takes. Do we need to ask for help from another person to set up the scale? Are the instructions clear and easy to follow, or are they confusing?
  • Data Storage: We consider how many measurements the bathroom scale can record and how many users can log in. How easy is it to see, access, and track our data? If the scale has an app, can we easily navigate it to find all of our metrics?
  • Display and Readability: We consider how easy the bathroom scale is to read in different conditions and positions. Can we see the numbers from different angles? How bright is the display and what color are the numbers?
  • Ease of Use: Does the scale provide readings quickly and easily? Is it easy to customize the weight settings? For scales with an app, we also consider how intuitive the app is to download and use.
  • Durability: To test durability, we drop a 9-pound toiletry bag on each bathroom scale twice. Then, we inspect each scale for damage, noting any broken parts, malfunctioning features, or scratches. Do we think this scale holds up to daily use by multiple people?
  • Value: To accurately assess each scale's value, we don't check the price until the end of the testing period, after we've evaluated it in all other categories. We review our overall experience with each bathroom scale and compare it against its cost. Would we buy this scale at full price, or only if it went on sale? We also consider whether we'd recommend the scale to a friend or family member.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurately do bathroom scales measure body fat?

Most bathroom scales that measure body fat percentage use bioelectrical impedance. Sensors send a small electrical current through one leg, across your pelvis, and down your other leg, measuring the amount of resistance created by body fat. These measurements can provide helpful estimates but aren't highly accurate.

Do bathroom scales lose accuracy over time?

Over time, bathroom scales can lose their accuracy due to general wear and tear from prolonged use and age. However, the changes in accuracy might not be significant. To get the best readings, place your scale in the same location every day to ensure precise measurements.

Does humidity affect bathroom scales?

Depending on the model you use, humidity may impact the accuracy of your bathroom scale, but it shouldn't be enough to provide a significantly inaccurate reading. It's best to store your scale in a dry, room-temperature location as opposed to next to the sink or shower.

How much does a high-quality bathroom scale cost?

You can expect to pay between $25 and $100 for a high-quality bathroom scale. More expensive scales will often track additional metrics that are typically unnecessary for the average user, while cheaper models may be slightly less precise.
