Getting Started

There are so many great aspects of this project! First of all, DIY tree branch decor is incredibly easy to make. Seriously, practically anyone can do this—even the self-professed, worst crafter in the world can handle this project. Also, it takes barely any supplies and you can use the finished versions in so many ways. So consider this project as a base for more complicated decor. Whether you use it on your front porch or decide to create your own spooky Halloween tree or gilded Christmas decor, or even just place them in a beautiful antique vessel—you've got plenty of options.

Gather Your Supplies

You really don't need much for this project but pay attention to the quality of the few supplies you do need. So if you forage branches from your backyard, you'll want to make sure they're not falling apart or full of bugs. Pick sturdy ones with interesting shapes to clean and paint. Also, if you can buy spray paint that has a paint and primer in one, it offers better and longer lasting coverage—especially if these guys are going to be going outside.

Prep Your Branches

It's really important to make sure your branches are in the best shape possible. While you can buy beautiful branches at your local craft store, which might be the best option if you're looking for something really specific, you'll be surprised what you can find in your own neighborhood. Make sure to take into account how sturdy they are and if they're tall enough for the project you want to make.

Gently check the branches to see if they have any loose bark or dirt. Work any of it off with your hands, clean the branch, and let them dry completely before moving on to the next step. You need the branch surfaces to be as clean as they can be because if they're not, the paint will peel off with whatever is covering

Spray Paint the Branches

In a well-ventilated area or preferably outside, cover the area that you're going to spray paint your branches with paper bags. There's going to be a lot of over-spray because the branches are so thin, so really take the time to fully prep the area.

Using light strokes, going back and forth, spray paint every part of the branch from a variety of sides and directions. Really take your time with this because it is so easy to miss a spot. Look at your branches from all angles before you place them somewhere to dry.

Let Them Dry

Allow your branches time to dry for a moment on the surface you spray painting them on. Then carefully pick them up by the bottom and stand them up vertically so they can dry completely.

Put them somewhere cool, dry, and out of the wind so they don't get blown around. When they're done drying, you can use them however you see fit. Enjoy all of the beauty they can add to your space for a variety of occasions!
