Is there anything better than buttery, garlic breadsticks? Especially when they come out of the oven hot, covered with herbs and a healthy heap of garlic? These breadsticks rival any Italian food chain breadstick (we may be biased) and will definitely be gone before you serve the next course. They are crazy addictive and should really come with a warning label. Consider yourself warned.

The best part about this recipe? You can make these breadsticks super quick if you use pre-made pizza dough. If you have a little more time, you can go homemade and use the included pizza dough recipe—it's great for bread, pizza, and calzones as well. Either option you choose, these breadsticks are sure to please everyone at your dinner table.

Ingredients

For the Pizza Dough:

  • 1 1/2 cups lukewarm water

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (one .25-ounce packet)

  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt

  • 2 teaspoons sugar

  • 3 to 4 cups flour

For the Breadsticks:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, for greasing and brushing

  • 16 ounces pizza dough, store-bought or homemade

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced or grated on a rasp grater

  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped

  • 2 to 3 teaspoons kosher salt

  • 1 teaspoon dried basil

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Steps to Make It

Make the Pizza Dough

If you are using pre-made dough, skip to the breadstick instructions.

  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, pour the lukewarm water and add the oil yeast, and sugar. Mix gently.

  3. Using the dough hook attachment, mix and add in the flour gradually until the dough is no longer sticky and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Continue to knead the mixture with the dough hook for about 3 to 5 minutes. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour, about 1/4 cup at a time.

  4. Drizzle the dough and the sides of the bowl with more olive oil. Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and let rise for 1 hour in a warm place.

  2. Preheat the oven to 425 F. Rub olive oil onto a rolling pin and brush a light layer of oil onto a piece of parchment paper. Grease a baking sheet as well, or line it with parchment paper.

  3. Roll the pizza dough out into a thick rectangle on the oiled parchment paper. The dough should be about 3/4- to 1-inch thick, and make roughly an 8- by 11-inch rectangle.

How to Freeze

  • To freeze, wrap the cooled breadsticks in a generous amount of aluminum foil and place in the freezer for up to a month. Defrost and reheat in the oven until warmed through.

Recipe Variation

  • Add a sprinkle of freshly grated Parmesan cheese to the warm breadsticks.
  • Top with grated mozzarella or Italian blend cheese and quickly broil to make cheesy breadsticks.

What Can I Make With Store-Bought Pizza Dough?

Prepared pizza dough or thawed frozen dough is good for more than just making pizza. Use it to make dishes like stuffed breads, calzones, pinwheels, and breadsticks.
