The 12 Best Cat Beds of 2024

For napping, hiding, and hanging out

On average, cats sleep 12 to 16 hours per day. The right bed can provide them a familiar and comfortable space of their own.

“When choosing a cat bed, pick a material that can be washed and that they can’t easily ingest, but that your cat will also like and use,” said Janet Cutler, Ph.D., Certified Cat Behaviorist at Cat World. “You may need to try out a couple different materials to see if there is one they prefer. Many cats like to be up higher where they can observe what’s going on around them."

Watch your cat closely and they’ll even give you hints about what they might prefer.

“If your cat likes to be in enclosed spaces, then a covered bed or one with high sides might be a good option,” Culter told The Spruce Pets. “And if your cat is always seeking the warmest spot in the home then a heated bed might be something they’d really enjoy.”

Our favorite cat bed is the Mau Lifestyle Vevo Woven Cat Bed because it is soft, handmade, and features a unique, adjustable design that will let you shape the bed to your cat’s preferences.

Mau Pets makes a wide range of cat trees, perches and other tastefully designed cat accessories. The Vevo is a functional, strikingly designed cat bed that’s made from a velvety single-weave, like a big plush basket. Each Vevo is handmade, so each bed is one-of-a-kind. Plus, it’s big enough for large cats.

The soft weave of the Vevo is a beautiful design, but also has a practical application, since the basket sides can be folded, rolled, or adjusted to create a unique look—raising the sides for cats that prefer an enclosed space, or rolling down one side so an older cat can more easily climb in. Plus, the bed’s woven texture creates bumps that cats can’t resist rubbing against.

While the Vevo can be used as a cat bed all on its own, Mau offers a supplemental cushion separately. The cushion is available in ten different colors and is machine washable. The Vevo itself is a little harder to wash—while you can technically machine wash on delicate settings, with minimal detergent and no spin cycle, the weave can take a long time to try. Unless it’s irreparably soiled, the Vevo can be maintained with a vacuum and lint roller instead.

You can try the Vevo for 45-days risk-free, and there’s a one-year warranty too. Plus, for every Vevo purchased, Mau plants a tree, further donating five percent of profits to environmental and animal causes.

What to Look for in a Cat Bed

Materials

Because our kitties spend such a large proportion of their life span sleeping, we want to be sure the materials that make up the bed are healthy for the cat. When possible, choose natural materials like cotton and wool over synthetic fibers. Synthetic fabrics may degrade over time and can release chemicals, especially when exposed to sunlight for extended periods. The same is true for stuffing and mattress materials.

Look for products made in the United States or Europe since they have the highest safety standards for pet products. Evaluate the craftsmanship as well. Some low-end pet beds are mass produced and therefore stitching can unravel quickly, shortening the life of your bed.

Shape and Size

Both shape and size of a pet bed depend highly on the preferences of your cat. Some cats prefer the added security of a cave-style bed while others are afraid to enter. Similarly, some cats like raised sides while others, especially older and disabled pets might prefer to sprawl on a mat-style bed with no sides.

Watch your cat’s normal behavior for clues. Do they crawl under the bed or sleep in the window sill? Do they sleep on a high up perch? Do they curl into a tiny ball under the covers with you at night or sprawl in the middle of the living room floor? These habits will give you hints on how to choose a style that your cat is more likely to use.

The size of the bed also relates to whether they like to curl up or sleep outstretched. Cats who sleep in a ball might like a smaller bed or a donut style that they can feel all around them. Those that sleep stretched out might like a mat style or extra large size.

If you choose a cave-style bed, make sure the opening is wider than your cat’s whiskers. Their whiskers are highly sensitive (perhaps even more powerful than their sight or smell) and they generally don’t like them unnecessarily stimulated.

It’s possible that you might need to try more than one shape or size to figure out what your cat prefers.

Elevation

Many cats prefer to perch in high places where they can see their surroundings and feel like they are above the fray. Some pet beds come with or include a pedestal to add elevation. Window beds and wall-mounted options can be hung relatively high, just be sure your cat can safely reach them.

Some beds are elevated only a couple of inches. Those beds allow air flow underneath for better heating and cooling. In the case of aging or injured pets, an elevated bed can also relieve pressure on joints, acting more like a hammock.

Heat and Sun Exposure

Because a cat’s normal body temperature is around 100 to 102 degrees, they tend to prefer warmth while they sleep. Especially if your home is drafty or you keep it cool, your cat might enjoy a heated bed or pad or a window bed that gets some sun exposure. In some cases a window bed might get too much sun. So think about the temperature range where you place a cat’s bed.

When buying a heated bed, choose one that is certified by an independent group or government agency to ensure that it is thermostatically controlled and cannot over heat.

Synthetic fibers tend to retain more heat than natural fibers that are generally more breathable. So a synthetic donut bed with deep crevices will be warmer than a cotton bed with an open style. Think about how the bed traps heat, or doesn’t and whether your cat prefers to bury themselves or sleep out in the open.

FAQ
  • How can I encourage my cat to sleep in their bed?

“To start encouraging your cat to sleep in their bed, make sure that their bed is inviting,” Dr. Cutler told The Spruce Pets. “If they aren’t using it, then you might want to try it in a different spot in your home as it could be the environment around the bed they aren’t liking, not the bed itself. You can then encourage your cat by sitting near it and petting them on it, or putting treats on the bed.”

Sometimes new cat beds need a touch of familiarity. “You can also try putting a blanket or towel that smells like them on their bed,” she adds. “Put it somewhere they rest for a couple days and then move it to their bed to encourage them to use it.”

  • Where should I place a cat bed?

“The perfect spot for a cat bed will really depend on what your cat likes,” Dr. Cutler said. “They may prefer warm sunny areas, or may like to be tucked away in a quieter area. Many cats like their beds to be elevated as well. If you watch where they like to rest, then that can give some clues. If your cat has a favorite spot already, then you’ll likely have the most success by putting the bed there, and if you need to move it away, do so very gradually.”
