Flower crowns are perfectly on-trend right now, but you don't have to break the bank to get one, nor do you have to be a professional crafter. Faux flowers help keep costs down and provide you with a DIY flower crown that stays fresh all day (and every day after). When friends ask where you got the crown, they'll never guess you made it yourself.

Whether you're looking for a flower crown for a wedding, a shower, or to go to the Renaissance festival, this DIY flower crown tutorial that can be accomplished in five easy steps will help you make a custom crown that can be used repeatedly.

Before You Begin

As you choose flowers for the crown, begin by considering where the crown will be worn and how it will be paired. Select some faux blooms that are a complementary shade to the attire. Feel free to mix colors like greens, pinks, purples, and oranges. You'll also want to choose flowers of varying sizes, textures, and colors to stand out in the crown.

For each crown, get at least one to two large blooms and three to five smaller blooms to use as accents. Choose a few stems of greenery to act as filler. You don't want too many large flowers, or the crown will become too heavy and oversized.

Think about balance. Before you attach the flowers, play with the arrangement around the crown. It doesn't have to be perfectly symmetrical, but you don't want it to look lopsided.

Warning

A glue gun is an optional but recommended tool. A hot glue gun produces molten glue over 300 degrees Fahrenheit that can potentially burn you or surfaces if not used carefully. To prevent the risk of burns, use gloves, goggles, and long sleeves. To protect surfaces, use a drip mat. Keep this tool out of children's hands unless you use a child-safe low-heat glue gun.

  • Faux flowers in various sizes and textures
  • Faux greenery for filler
  • Floral wire
  • Floral tape

Instructions

  1. Make the Base

    Create a base for the flower crown. Cut a length of floral wire that's long enough to wrap around the crown of your (or the wearer's) head twice, with a little room to spare.

    Measure around the head with the wire and plan where you'd like your crown to sit. Create a loop with the wire, twisting one end around the middle of the wire in the size you'd like.

    Wrap the long end of the wire around, weaving in and out of the loop to create a strong base. Continue wrapping until you reach the end, and twist the end around the loop to secure.

    Tip

    When choosing floral wire, get at least a 22-inch gauge, which is a thicker wire. If you can only get a 26-inch gauge, you can use it, but you need to double it up to make the wire stronger to support everything.

  2. Wire in the Main Blooms

    Once you have a base, start placing your main flowers. Start with the largest blooms and place them where you'd like them. If your stems have wires in them, you can wrap the wires around the base of your crown. If not, use floral tape and wrap it multiple times around the trimmed stems of your blooms.

  3. Add Filler Between Your Flowers

    Using the same technique, start covering the entire loop of the crown base with your filler greenery. Every so often, you may choose to include a smaller flower. Work your way around the base until you fill the entire crown with greenery.

  4. Add Any Extras

    Once you've completed the crown base by covering it with greenery, go back and add any other flower or leaf pieces that you might like. You can insert the wired stem of your florals into the wire of the crown base, but for it to last longer, use a glue gun if you want to apply individual leaves and stems and attach them to the existing foliage.

  5. It's Ready to Wear

    Since it's custom-fitted, your DIY flower crown should fit securely. However, if you find that it slips, secure it with a few hidden bobby pins.
