My 9 yr old was super excited to have this gift under the tree. The last one she had was over 100 years old. It had dry rotted and broke when she last used it. This new wooden sled is coated with a sort of polyurethane. It should last another 100 yrs. The skids are super, super fast and do not require the traditional "use of rubbing a bar of soap before use" on them. The 60 inch size sled is a plus, as two older kids are able to ride at the same time. Being able to steer with the forward wood bar, give the rider more control as to the direction they are going. I am very pleased with this purchase. The price is was a little steep, but the durability, sturdiness, and reliability make it worth the price. I highly recommend this product for anyone who remembers the great fun of sledding as a kid and wants to repeat that experience with their own child!

I bought them for my grand kids...one had a split plank in the middle where the pivot bolt is. They replaced the sled at no cost to me....very simple process. The planks are however very thin, I would guess the weight limit should be less than 150LBs or they might break if they went airborne. Metal Frame is solid! I had one as a kid & they are real fast....plus you can steer them away from a hazard.

How do you make 10-year-old Montanans REALLY happy during one of the snowiest winters on record? I'm not sure about other methods, but a slick ride down a snow-packed hill on this classic beauty of a wooden sled with three friends on the back has been one sure-fire hit for our kids. The plastic sled we started the season with lasted for fewer than 20 rides down the local hill, so we researched more durable sledding choices, including toboggans, metal disks, and fiberglass composite sleds. When I discovered this 54-inch Flexible Flyer available in "used -excellent condition", it didn't take a minute to complete the order. Flooded with nostalgia over riding a similar sled during my own childhood, I couldn't wait to surprise our kids. Due to a couple of negative reviews, I dreaded the prospect of diminished product quality; however, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this modern sled is as sturdily well-built as the one I remembered from the 1960's.

This sled brought back many gleeful childhood memories. The larger one is even more amazing. Long, lean, and very steerable (hence the name) this sled needs two things to be called perfect. One is a piece of rope to be used as a rein when on top or to haul it up the hill. To those who whine it was not included, grow up.
The other thing is to use the sled until the paint has been stripped off the runners. I remember how much faster my sled went when the blade surfaces were nothing but shining steel.
To those who extol plastic flat sleds, I would say that the surface area in contact with the snow slows one down. Once you establish a track, the Flexible Flyer is the fastest show in town. It will cut into deep snow until there is a track, but then you can fly.
Perhaps one could wax the runners until the paint is shed?
This is the closest thing to Olympic luge once you have a good track. You should probably grab a helmet!
